Demand for Euthanasia in Germany Has Increased
Growing demand for euthanasia reflects societal development and demographic changes.
In Germany, more and more people are turning to organized forms of assisted suicide. Since the Federal Constitutional Court's ruling in 2020, which strengthened the right to self-determined dying, euthanasia organizations are gaining increasing importance. In 2025, according to current figures, more than 1,200 people made use of corresponding services, a further increase compared to the previous year and an expression of a continuing trend. This was reported by Evangelische Zeitung. The increase in assisted suicides is essentially due to the aging society as well as the rising number of severe and chronic illnesses. Complex health impairments, progressive suffering, or a deep sense of life saturation in advanced age are cited as frequent motives. It is notable that most assisted suicides affect people over 80 years old and women are more strongly represented in almost all age groups.
The social relevance of the topic is noticeably increasing. Euthanasia organizations are expanding their information offerings, while the total number of suicides in Germany is rising slightly again. The current figures reflect a growing societal debate about self-determination, geriatric medical care, and palliative support.
