Addiction experts called for stronger prevention against alcohol consumption
Germany allegedly ranks above the international average in consumption.
A coalition of health and addiction support institutions is calling for increased efforts to prevent alcohol problems in Germany. In a paper published by the German Centre for Addiction Issues, it states that in addition to medical and psychosocial care, preventive services in particular must be expanded everywhere. This was reported by evangelisch.de. According to the experts, the average consumption of pure alcohol per person in Germany is about 10.6 liters per year, which is significantly above the OECD average. Alcohol is linked to many diseases and causes high social costs, estimated at about 57 billion euros annually.
The alliance is calling for, among other things, higher taxes and minimum prices for alcohol, stricter traffic regulations, and less advertising for alcoholic beverages. The goal is to permanently reduce alcohol consumption and protect the population's health in the long term.
