Tensions with Church Led to Incident in Yerevan
Conflict between government and Armenian Apostolic Church has intensified.
In Yerevan, an incident occurred on March 29 in the vicinity of a church service that was also attended by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. According to authorities, a total of three people were arrested. They are being investigated for hooliganism and interference with the lawful activities of an official. This was reported by RBC. The incident occurred during the Palm Sunday liturgy at St. Anna Church. Upon leaving the church, tensions arose between those present and security personnel. According to reports, individual persons attempted to approach the Prime Minister and push him away from the area. Security forces intervened while Pashinyan himself called for calm. Parts of the incident were spread on social networks.
The incident is connected to ongoing tensions between the government and the Armenian Apostolic Church. Church representatives have repeatedly criticized the government's policies, particularly since developments following the Karabakh conflict. Observers therefore see the incident not only as an isolated event, but as an expression of a broader conflict between state leadership and church structures.
