Patriarch Daniel led the Great Canon of Repentance in Sofia
Divine service emphasized the importance of repentance and spiritual life.
On March 23, in the fifth week of Great Lent, Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria led the complete Great Canon of Repentance of Saint Andrew of Crete at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Nedelja in Sofia. He was assisted by the cathedral clergy, while Bishop Ioan of Braniza participated in the service. The liturgical chants were performed by the Sofia Priestly Choir. This was reported by Orthodox Times. Following the service, the Patriarch addressed the faithful with a sermon. He emphasized that God calls every person to repentance and that through sincere contrition and faith, even the burden of sin can be overcome. Divine grace, according to the Patriarch, illuminates the heart and leads man back to God.
Referring to examples from the Canon of Repentance, he spoke about Adam and Eve and warned against self-justification, which prevents true repentance. He contrasted this with the humility and obedience of the Mother of God. In conclusion, he encouraged the faithful to understand repentance as a permanent path and to renew their relationship with God through prayer, confession, and spiritual effort.
