France debates law on euthanasia

A government bill by the Macron administration is causing intense political and ethical discussions due to regulations concerning psychological suffering and possible access requirements.

France is currently deliberating a law on medically assisted dying that was prepared under President Emmanuel Macron. The debate centers on the conditions under which patients could be entitled to such assistance. Critics complain that individual formulations are too unclear and could be interpreted too broadly, while supporters point to strict medical and legal protective mechanisms. This was reported by Euronews. At the center is a revision of the law that allows for the consideration of persistent physical or psychological complaints, provided they are related to a serious, incurable disease. On social media, this has partly led to concerns that in the future, people with depression could also be entitled to assisted dying. However, experts and parliamentarians clarify that psychological suffering alone is not sufficient and that there must always be a serious, advanced underlying disease.

Medical professionals and politicians simultaneously point to still unresolved questions, such as dealing with complicated disease progressions or acute psychological crises following serious diagnoses. The draft law has not yet been finally adopted and is being debated controversially across party lines. Another vote in the National Assembly is planned, with a final decision expected at the earliest during the course of the year.
