EU Commission examines initiative on abortion travel in Europe
By February 25, the European Commission intends to decide on the "My Voice My Choice" proposal, which would enable cross-border abortions using EU funds.
The European Commission is facing a decision on the "My Voice My Choice" citizens' initiative, which would allow women to travel to other EU states for abortions if these are legally restricted or prohibited in their own country. According to the proposal, such procedures could also be financed from European funds under certain conditions. A Commission decision is expected on February 25. This was reported by Catholic Vote. The initiative aims to harmonize the different legal regulations in EU member states. Critics, however, fear that this would undermine stricter protective provisions of individual countries and promote adaptation to more liberal laws. At the same time, the question is raised whether the European Union has the necessary competencies for such projects in the area of abortion at all.
Furthermore, reservations were voiced regarding the financial equipment and political intentions of the project. Critics instead advocate for better support for families and expectant mothers as well as for a clear definition of competencies at the EU level. The Commission's upcoming decision could therefore be groundbreaking for the Union's future role in bioethical and health policy areas.
