At least 40 dead in Boko Haram attack in northeastern Nigeria
Islamist militias attack civilians again – farmers and fishermen among the victims, more people are missing.
In an attack in the northeastern Nigerian state of Borno on January 13, 2025, at least 40 people were killed. Authorities blame the Islamist militia Boko Haram for the act, presumably together with fighters from the Islamic State in West Africa group. Most victims were farmers and fishermen, and numerous people are still missing. This was reported by Tagesschau. According to reports, the attackers had previously warned the population not to cultivate their fields anymore. After some residents defied this ban, the raid occurred. The regional government called on people to stay only in designated security zones, where the military is taking intensified action against armed groups.
The terrorist group Boko Haram has been active for years in northeastern Nigeria as well as in adjacent regions and regularly carries out attacks on the civilian population. According to United Nations estimates, tens of thousands of people have already been killed by the violence and more than two million displaced. The extremists pursue the goal of establishing rule in the region based on a radical interpretation of Islamic law.
