First Study Day for Orthodox Prison Chaplaincy Held in Belgium
In Ghent, clergy gathered to exchange experiences and network regarding pastoral care for inmates.
On February 7, 2026, the first study day for Orthodox prison chaplaincy in Belgium took place in the parish of Saint Andrew in Ghent. The event began with the Divine Liturgy in the historic chapel of the Apostles Andrew and Sophronius, led by Athenagoras, Metropolitan of Belgium and Exarch of the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Orthodox prison chaplains as well as other clergy of the Metropolis participated in the celebration. This was reported by Orthodox Times. The goal of the meeting was to raise greater awareness of the importance of spiritual and human accompaniment of women and men in correctional facilities. After the service, participants gathered for a common meal that fostered exchange in a fraternal atmosphere.
This was followed by a professional lecture by Protopresbyter Ioannis Psomas on the topic of prison chaplaincy in the Netherlands. Based on his practical experience, he presented commonalities, differences, and current challenges of pastoral work in correctional facilities, emphasizing the importance of personal presence and accompaniment for people in custody.
