England and Wales reached record high in abortions

Publications show a record number of abortions for 2019. Official figures confirm a significant increase, which pro-life advocates criticize.

In England and Wales, abortions have reached a historic high. According to official government data, a total of 209,519 abortions were registered in 2019, the highest number ever recorded since legalization through the Abortion Act in 1967. This was reported by EWTN News. The statistics show an increase in abortion rates particularly among women aged 25 and older, with the strongest increase in the age group between 30 and 34 years. Around 40 percent of women who underwent the procedure had previously had at least one abortion. Additionally, the number of medical abortions increased, which are increasingly being performed at home. Some of the procedures were carried out due to suspected serious illnesses or disabilities of the unborn child.

Pro-life organizations expressed concern about the development and warned of growing societal acceptance of abortions. They attributed the increase to, among other things, easier availability as well as the portrayal of the procedure as a simple standard medical measure. At the same time, they called for stronger support for women in conflict situations and more programs that show alternatives to abortion.

Previously, UOJ reported that the number of violent deaths among Catholic clergy worldwide has increased.
