Nettetal commemorates the victims of National Socialism
In a moving ceremony at the Old Church Lobberich, students and the city focused on the fate of persecuted fellow citizens.
On January 27, a memorial service for the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of National Socialism was held in the Old Church of Lobberich in Nettetal. This day of remembrance marks the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp in 1945. Under the motto "Every person has a name," a dignified tribute took place for those who were persecuted and murdered under Nazi rule. This was reported by LokalKlick. The dignified memorial event in the Old Church of Lobberich was largely organized by students from the Municipal Comprehensive School Nettetal, who presented their moving impressions and documentary findings from an excursion to Auschwitz. As a touching remembrance of the Jewish victims from their own community, such as members of the Rosenthal and Zanders families as well as Erich Cohen, symbolic stumbling stones were displayed in the church. Musical accompaniment and the presentation of individual biographies rounded out the program and made Jewish life visible in all its breadth, beyond the horrors of persecution.
The city's mayor also participated in the memorial service, emphasized the importance of remembrance, and expressed his gratitude to the committed students. As a guest, the chairwoman of the Jewish community from a neighboring city was also present. The moving conclusion was formed by the ceremonial reading of the names of the Jewish victims from their own community and the lighting of candles. The event ended with an appreciation of the ongoing commitment of the city and local schools to preserving remembrance.
