British House of Lords continues to advance liberalization of abortion
A controversial clause could enable impunity until birth.
The British House of Lords has rejected an amendment to the "Crime and Policing Bill," thereby further opening the path for extensive liberalization of abortion. The controversial Clause 208 provides that abortions could remain decriminalized in the future regardless of the stage of pregnancy. This was reported by Tagespost. Critics warn that this could undermine existing protective mechanisms and particularly increase late-term abortions. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, also expressed concerns regarding the possible impact on the protection of unborn life, while simultaneously speaking out against criminal prosecution of women.
With this decision, the legislative process is not yet complete, but the reform is considered a significant step toward comprehensive reform of abortion legislation in the United Kingdom.
