Orthodox Church in Mozambique commemorates flood victims
Metropolitan John holds memorial service and honors humanitarian aid from Greece.
In the Cathedral of the Holy Archangels in Maputo, Metropolitan John held a memorial service for the victims of the severe floods in Mozambique. According to official reports, more than 350 people died in the natural disasters. The service was dedicated to prayers for the deceased and comfort for the bereaved. This was reported by Orthodox Times.
During the celebration, the Metropolitan also conveyed condolences and blessings from Theodore II, the head of the Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa. In his address, Metropolitan John emphasized that protecting nature as God's creation is a shared responsibility. Environmental destruction often has particularly severe consequences for poor and vulnerable populations.
At the same time, the Metropolitan informed about humanitarian aid that was sent from Greece to Mozambique. Food and essential goods were provided through the Greek Red Cross. On behalf of the Patriarchate, he particularly thanked the Greek Consulate General in Maputo for the swift support and provision of extensive aid shipments. Such initiatives are an important sign of solidarity and hope in times of great need.
