Mourning in Ludwigshafen: Thousands commemorate murdered train conductor

On February 5, 2026, more than a thousand people gathered in Ludwigshafen for a memorial service for the deceased train conductor Serkan C. His family, friends, colleagues, as well as representatives from politics and the railway sector gathered in front of the Alemi Islam Mosque to commemorate together. Among the participants were also the Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate and the Mayor of the city. This was reported by SWR.

The 36-year-old father of a family had been fatally injured a few days earlier while working on a regional train. According to investigators, he was attacked by a passenger without a valid ticket during a ticket inspection and suffered a brain hemorrhage, from which he later died. A suspect is in custody and has not yet commented on the charges.

During the ceremony, the coffin of the deceased was carried through the crowd. In speeches, colleagues and political representatives honored the victim as a dedicated employee and valued person. After the prayer, the body is to be transferred to the Turkish city of Gaziantep, where burial in the family circle is planned. The incident has sparked a nationwide discussion about better security measures for railway employees.
