Joint "Lark" Baking in Hamburg Announced for Lent
In the middle of Great Lent, the Orthodox community in Hamburg invites everyone to a joint baking event on Sunday, March 22. The occasion is the commemoration day of the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste, when so-called "larks" are baked in many Slavic traditions. This was reported by the youth project Sretenie. The lark is considered a symbolic bird: its song in flight, its almost vertical ascent, and its early singing even before sunrise make it a symbol of spiritual ascent, awakening, and hope. In religious interpretation, it represents humanity's turning toward God and the anticipation of the coming Easter feast.
The joint baking event combines this symbolic meaning with lived tradition. Participants have the opportunity to prepare the "larks" in community while engaging with the spiritual content of the Lenten season.
