DNA Test Questions Alleged "Blood Tears" from Trevignano
A genetic examination has raised new doubts about the authenticity of the alleged Marian apparition in Trevignano. As Italian media report, a DNA test revealed that the blood traces found on the Madonna statue match the genetic material of the alleged visionary Gisella Cardia. Cardia's lawyer explained this by her frequent contact with the statue. This was reported by the Evangelische Zeitung. Starting in 2016, the Italian woman, whose real name is Maria Giuseppa Scarpulla, claimed she had recurring visions of Mary, Jesus, and God the Father. In Trevignano, a locality northwest of Rome, followers regularly gathered for prayer meetings around a Madonna statue that was said to occasionally weep bloody tears. Numerous believers saw this as a divine sign.
The Catholic Church met the growing cult around the alleged apparitions of Trevignano with increasing restraint. In March 2024, the responsible bishop, after concluding an investigation, prohibited any religious services and prayer meetings at the location. Shortly thereafter, the Vatican also officially clarified that no supernatural phenomena were present. Parallel to this, the prosecutor's office is investigating the woman. Pilgrims accuse her of fraud and unlawful enrichment, and several believers are demanding the return of donations they made.
Previously, the UOJ reported that the procession for the Triumph of Orthodoxy took place in Palermo.
