New Draft Law on Euthanasia Planned

Politicians from various parliamentary groups are working on a renewed initiative to legally regulate assisted suicide. The goal is a joint bill that should be introduced to the Bundestag before the summer recess of 2026. The trigger is the legal situation that remains unresolved to this day following the Federal Constitutional Court's 2020 ruling, which declared the then-existing ban on commercial euthanasia null and void. This was reported by Evangelisch.de. According to the assessment of the politicians involved, there is an urgent need for action. Currently, the number of assisted suicides is increasing without sufficient legal safeguards to ensure that the decision is actually based on free and lasting will. A new regulation should therefore prevent abuse and counteract the societal normalization of organized suicide assistance.

At the same time, a comprehensive protection concept is being sought that establishes clear procedures and control mechanisms. Representatives of the initiative emphasize that Germany has comparatively few binding requirements internationally and that a legal foundation is necessary to create legal certainty for those affected, relatives, and medical personnel.
